Bits and bobs from down under: “Rigby’s Reliable Candy Teacher” and a recipe for Valentine’s Day

There’s a used bookshop in Dee Why, called Retriever Books. I went straight to the cookery section, looking for old patisserie books. Eventually I brought home with me the fourteenth edition of Rigby’s Reliable Candy Teacher, published in 1923. It contains an incredible amount of information and recipes, even a vademecum for the soda stand owner/manager. Some of Mr. Rigby’s advice, what we would just consider common sense, is still applicable to modern baking, but the book is mostly an amusing journey back to the past.

I won’t celebrate Valentine’s Day tomorrow, but here’s a recipe if you feel old fashioned and romantic.. Cupid Chewing Kisses. Enjoy!
